Theory: Clemson will average 50 points per game

Nobody’s done it since 2013, and it’s harder than ever because of the 15th game should the Tigers make it to the title game. But if any team can, it’s the one that averaged 44 points per game last year and brings back the best QB in the sport with a schedule that is *tugs collar* at best.

And now our watch has ended. Clemson may get near it, but it's a virtual certainty they won't eclipse our stated goal. We entered this quest with noble goals and kept hope longer than we should have, but we have reached our end. Go forth Clemson and still maybe win the national championship.

Clemson heard y’all talkin’ shit. The Tigers scored 59 points against BC, and I think they could conceivably get to 70 against Wofford this week. If they don’t we’re most likely actually dead here. For now, we’re merely on life support.

The turnover bug is so brutal. End zone turnovers make life particularly difficult when you’re, uhh, hoping a team scores a lot of points. Clemson’s 45 points against Louisville do make me feel good about the fact that the team can still score more because the Tigers left some points on the table, but they’ve gotta stop leaving points on the table. End zone INTs aren't the way to do that.

Let’s get mathy for a sec. Clemson has to average basically 60 points through the rest of the season. I’m not saying they don’t have the talent to do it, but the top end of the scoring offense has so far not proved it can be that high (only topped 52 once). And the floor may be a touch too low. I’m holding onto the (misplaced) hope that games against Wofford and Wake Forest and Louisville could produce some really eye popping offensive scored, but so far I will begin to embrace reality and acknowledge optimism is waning weekly.

It’s time for me to stop being a math denier (if only slightly) and also face the fact that this Clemson offense has a bit of an issue. It looks like Trevor Lawrence is pressing a lot, and as my colleague Bud will tell you, Clemson is feeling the loss of Hunter Renfrow as an underneath threat. All of that is as troubling for our stated goal as the mere 21 points scored against North Carolina. My faith is beginning to wane, but we press on.

Baby, we are cruising. Clemson played 111 players on Saturday night and pulled its starters before halftime. They still scored 52 points and raised their scoring average to 42.3. We are willing this to existence come hell or high water.

The Tigers weren’t really clicking and still scored 41 points. Hey, that’s not half bad! Again, there will be points where Clemson can hang more than half a hundred on teams. This is one of those weeks against the Charlotte 49ers. But it is heartening that they can face a defense that can make Trevor Lawrence look sorta off and still at least scrape near 50. The floor is raised for the Tigers this season, and through three games they’re averaging 39 points. We soldier on.

We’re not downgrading here, and that may surprise you. I wasn’t too down on the fact that the Tigers didn’t blow the Aggies out. Last season they scored 48 in the opener and 28 against A&M. This season, 52 against Georgia Tech and 24 against A&M. They’re not falling off the pace I need them at, but they’re not exceeding it either. However, they do get a chance to do so at Syracuse. Unlike last year’s third opponent for Clemson, the Orange won’t do what Georgia Southern did last year and eat possessions up in a blowout that should be worse. There’s a chance for max blood, and for the Tigers to get ahead of last year’s 44 points per game pace.

Oh, y'all didn't know Trevor Lawrence could run too? It's like that scene in Jurassic Park where the raptor opens the door. You previously only thought your were screwed. Now you know.
