Theory: Kentucky wins the SEC East

One side quest we’re exploring within this side quest is this: What is the true virtue of being “right”? What is truly to be gained by picking another Alabama-Georgia SEC title game? New things please, in the form of a rabid band of large blue cats. Against A&M out of the West, if we want to make things real interesting.

IT WAS A NOBLE QUEST AND I MAINTAIN IT WOULD HAVE WORKED BUT FOR THE INJURY VARMINT. At 1-4 in SEC play at midseason, the Wildcats are, at long last, eliminated from the East division race. However! Soothing of the soul is soon to come thanks to a November conference slate consisting of Tennessee and Vanderbilt. Chow down, kitties.

Florida’s loss to LSU and Georgia’s collapse against South Carolina left the window mathematically open for Kentucky to still somehow steal an SEC East Championship away from the rest of the division. Kentucky will likely stick their head through that window and get decapitated immediately, but that is not the point. It’s still open, baby!

LOOK. THIS COULD STILL HAPPEN. Just because the Cats lost three conference games already, just because that’s more conference losses than even Tennessee has managed so far, do not abandon hope for matters in the SEC East to get real, REAL stupid. Kentucky’s further along in their SEC schedule than any other team in the division save South Carolina, so for the next couple weeks at least, a slim (and highly unlikely) hope remains for their conference rivals to roll over and show their bellies. We may never see the Puce Mark Stoops face of our dreams in this life, but the dream is alive.

Kentucky made a game comeback effort against Missisippi State, but they’re 0-2 in conference and have a quarterback who’s either going to play through injuries or yield to a depth chart with no college experience. They’ll get cousins-in-reeling South Carolina and Arkansas next, though, so if there is an Amazingly Magical Run To The SEC Championship Game, it starts for Kentucky here. (Or they’ll lose to South Carolina and we can put this storyline in the attic and forget about it until we sell this house.)

Win a little, lose a lot: The ’Cats knocked off Eastern Michigan in relatively short order, but the cakewalk win cost them their starting quarterback. Terry Wilson was horse-collared to the ground during the third quarter, injuring his left knee. He tore his patellar tendon and will miss the remainder of the season. Backup QB Sawyer Smith had less than a week to prepare to run Kentucky’s offense into a conference slate. It ended poorly when the Gators had to resort to a backup of their own and pulled off a comeback to win the game.

[You, an untutored wretch] Kentucky cannot win even an unstable division like the SEC East after playing occasionally snoozy football against Toledo! They fell behind at home to the Rockets before clawing back to a comfortable margin of victory! How are they supposed to compete with the likes of Florida and Georgia? [Me, wise and enlightened] Toledo could win its own conference. Don't worry about this perfectly considered and flawless plan unless they stub their toes on Eastern Michigan. And don't act for one second like you have a clue what kind of Florida team is going to show up in Week 3.
